Health & Safety

Understanding Auditing Principles and Practices:

Candidates must possess the knowledge and understanding of ethics and standards of conduct for auditors. The should demonstrate knowledge of the design, structure and key planning elements of health and safety audits, including pre-audit activities and developing audit findings, recommendations, and processes.

Internal Controls:

The auditor must understand the existing systems and procedures at the audited facility to ensure compliance with regulatory criteria; the exam covers topics such as identification of applicable compliance areas, responsibility/accountability for compliance tasks and functions, training and qualifications of facility staff, availability of compliance procedures, and quality assurance mechanisms for compliance.

Assessing Compliance with Laws and Regulations:

The Auditor should understand systems for managing compliance and the process by which health and safety laws and regulations are developed, implemented, and enforced. The auditor should have knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements to the extent that the auditor can assess a system for achieving compliance.

Technical Health and Safety Principles and Practices:

The auditor should have knowledge of the standards and practices recognized by health and safety authorities including principles such as safety, design and recognition, and evaluation and hazard control. The auditor should have knowledge of the fundamental health and safety concepts, management systems for implementing them, training and education, and human dimensions associated with health and safety. In addition, the auditor should have full knowledge of principles and management systems such as ISO 14000.

Applying Professional Auditing Practices:

An auditor must demonstrate fundamental knowledge of professional auditing practices such as those prescribed by BEAC®'s Standards for the Professional Practice of Environmental, Health and Safety Auditing.
